Distance Learning and Distance Homework: March 18th

Hi Middle School!

So… tomorrow will be a new day for all of us! We are prepared and ready!

If you haven’t already, please make sure you take a look at your Virtual Schedule. You can find the direct links to them (and updated each week) on my blog menu page here.

Also within the “Distance Learning” tab on my blog (i.e. next to where Exam Central is) you can find virtual learning expectations in Middle School, some F.A.Q.’s and some information around Math for all parents and students K-8

So what does that mean to you for tomorrow?

Log in tomorrow morning at 8:45 for Homeroom …and we go from there.

How do you log in? You have a link that you can find in 3 places:

  • an email link sent to you already (click on the link)
  • in your google calendar (click on the link in the activity)
  • on “meet.google.com” (this will display all your LIVE Meets for the day)

…you will find the method that works best for you as we go along. Make sure you are logged into your OJCS GOOGLE ACCOUNT.

I will be moderating homeroom in Grade 6 each morning, Mrs. Bertrend for Grade 7, and Mr. Washerstein for Grade 8.

You will notice “Independent work periods” in your schedule. They are times to work on items that you would have had for homework, or in school assignments and in-class work. This week, you are responsible to do the following for Friday in math (YES, everything is on the calendar for me, as well as here, just like normal )

Grade 6:

  1. For Friday: Complete and Post your blog post about your First Math Exam Reflection. (If you need pictures and your tutorials- let me know)

Grade 7:

  1. Go to the “Riddle me This…?” post (should be right before this one) and complete 3 riddles that are NOT your riddles.
  2. Do the work to answer the questions, and take a picture of your work and email it to me for Friday.
  3. Yes you can do riddles from another grade, but remember, if you were not in the extended groups working with me on multiplying and dividing, the grade 8 riddles may be more challenging for you to answer.
  4. If you are NOT completed your riddle, please do so FOR Thursday, so I can upload it for others to do.

Grade 8:

  1. Go to the “Riddle me This…?” post (should be right before this one) and complete 3 riddles that are NOT your riddles.
  2. Kind of hard, when a lot are missing: SO if you are NOT completed your riddle, please do so FOR Thursday, so I can upload it for others to do!
  3. Do the work to answer the questions, and take a picture of your work and email it to me for Friday.
  4. Yes you can do riddles from another grade, but do AT LEAST 2 from grade 8, that have multiplying and dividing. (take a look at grade 7- some of them challenged themselves to learn it in extended classes with me)

See you all on the other side of the screen!

riddle me this…?

Grade 7 and 8 have been working on integer relationships and computations.

They have been investigating concepts around (at various levels); addition and subtraction principles, multiplication and division principles and the zero principle, and integers in Order of Operations.

To solidify their learning, students created riddle puzzles where users have to correctly answer questions involving integers to solve/find the answer to the riddle.

Here’s a small sample of all their riddles. Can you figure them out?

Grade 7 (Adding and Subtracting Integers)

Grade 8 (Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying, and Dividing Integers)

Grade Six from a Different “angle”

What’s Grade 6 up to these days in math?

Learning and investigating angles!

This week and next, students have been able to “choose their own angle adventures” in math class as a form to personalize their learning opportunities and abilities.

Some are measuring, classifying, and sketching, while others are investigating concepts and properties of complementary, supplementary, vertical, and opposite angles.

Who needs a textbook anymore in math? Not this class! Smiles, work, and engagement all around!

Well done grade Six!

Homework: February 24th

Welcome Back Middle School!

Hope you all enjoyed a wonderful break, here and/or away.

This week there are a few things to note:

  2. Exams: Grade 6 will receive their exams back this week, after the class has completed reflection #2 (no bias from mark of exam) Grade 7 and 8 Exams will be returned next week.
  3. As we get back into routine, please expect a little more homework practice being posted. This will help build fluency and mastery of concepts, as focus deeply into problem solving and operational use and practice in all grade 6, 7, and 8.

Homework this week:

Grade 6: DUE WEDNESDAY

  • Add to your Exam Reflection Google Doc (which you began before your exam, ie. the one you already shared with me) Remember this will help support your upcoming blog post with experiences and thoughts around your first exam experience.

Respond the following questions: (with explanations and some detail)

    1. How did you study/prepare for the exam?
    2. How did writing the exam making you feel? (you can speak to anything about the night before the exam, while writing the exam, or after the exam was complete)
    3. Did you feel prepared for the exam and the content on the exam?
  • Colour/decorate your Problem Solving sheet that you will use as we create a Problem Solving Folder for your personal use and reference.

Grade 7: DUE WEDNESDAY

Our next unit is: Integers

Complete the following questions on page 185 as a warm-up of this unit. WITHOUT a calculator.

# 1, 3, 4, 5, 6

If you needed or used a calculator for any part of this practice, please let me know beside your work, so I can have a conference with you, for success in this unit.

PARENT INFO for at home support for work with Integers

• Help your child identify real-life situations (for example, situations described in the
news), in which negative numbers are used.
• Discuss how negative and positive numbers are added in sporting events (for example,
gains and losses in football, plus-minus scores in hockey, and above and below par
in golf).
• Discuss scoring in games such as shuffleboard, curling, or crokinole, where two
different team markers in the same area cancel each other out. (This is an application
of the “zero principle” in mathematics.)

Grade 8: DUE WEDNESDAY

Our next unit is Integers, and we will be taking a step further to combine Fractions within this unit, with and without polynomials! (what, yes!, we’re doing that!)

Complete the following questions on page 181 as a warm-up of this unit. WITHOUT a calculator.

(you do not need to use or draw counters) #2, 3, 5, 6, 9

If you needed or used a calculator for any part of this practice, please let me know beside your work, so I can have a conference with you, for success in this unit.

when you give a kid a challenge…

Who doesn’t love a challenge!…?

The grade 7 and 8 students were given the 2020 Challenge in my math classes, (courtesy of Dave Martin) this week.

Students were given two levels of challenge to choose from:

  • Use all or some of the numbers from 1-10 to create an equation that equals 2020

OR

  • Use all the numbers 1-10, only once, to create an equation that equals 2020

So what happens when you open up learning as a “challenge? They go for it, they work through it, and they feel good when they succeed! (even outside of the classroom!)

Here are some of their successful submissions, which of course we shared with Dave Martin on Twitter, with his High School students (Yep, his High School Students!)

Here’s to a 2020 that is full of thoughtful and struggle worthy challenges and genuine and proud successes!
